Within the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for The Anglican Church of the Province of Myanmar. Within the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer we pray for the mission and ministry of all people at Camp Bishopswood, its staff and campers.

 

We offer prayers of healing and comfort for:

We pray for all who have died that they may have a place in your eternal kingdom, especially Paul Donald Quimper, son of Bill and Dot Quimper, and Mary Morse Reevy. We also pray for those who have died in conflicts throughout the world, especially the U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces and civilians who have died in Iraq.

   

We pray this week for the Pastoral Care Committee and for all the people of this Cathedral, especially we give thanks for Parker, Suzanne, Helen, Madeline and Ellie Roberts; William Roberts; Sonia, John and Caroline Robertson.

 

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Cathedral Family Picnic. Thank you to Susan Buteau, Mac McCuller, Frank Smith and all the others who helped prepare and clean up for the Cathedral Family picnic last Sunday at Deering Oaks Park. It was a very fun and relaxing time. Looking forward to it next year!

 

Wednesday Bible Studies Move to Sundays. The Brown Bag Bible Study that traditionally meets on Wednesdays at noon will be suspended for the summer. However, the Bible Study will continue throughout the summer on Sundays at 9am in the Upper Hall.  This Sunday’s Bible Study will be led by Dean Shambaugh.

 

Speaker’s Forum entitled “Myanmar in Crisis: Calamitous Challenge: Mynamar/Burma State of Affairs – From Whence, Why and What Next?” will be held Monday, June 16th at 6:30pm at Church of St. Mary the Virgin in Falmouth. The speaker will be the Rev. Katharine Babson, the official missionary of The Episcopal Church USA to the Church of the Anglican province of Myanmar. In celebration of Elsa Dalheim’s 97th birthday, parishioners are invited to bring cards and warm wishes to next Sunday’s Coffee Hour where Elsa will be presented a cake. Happy Birthday Elsa!

 

Bible study next Sunday, June 22nd. The lesson of the day are:  Genesis 21:8-21, Psalm 86:1-10, 16-17, Romans 6:1b-11, Matthew 10:24-39.   Canon Coleman will be leading the study and will focus on the story of Hagar as it contrasts with Jesus’ powerful language of splitting families in the Gospel reading.

 

Ordination Anniversary. Dean Shambaugh will celebrate his 20th anniversary of ordination on Tuesday, June 17th. Those who wish are invited to stay after the 12:10pm service that day for the usual brown bag lunch that traditionally follows the Tuesday service.

 

Walk for Pride. Please join the Beloved Disciples as members walk in support of the LGBT community in the 2008 Southern Maine Gay Pride Parade and Festival.  This year’s event will be held on Saturday, June 21st.  Meet on Preble Street in downtown Portland at 11:45am (look for the St Luke’s banner).  Following the parade will be a festival in Deering Oaks Park from 1-5pm.  All are welcome.

 

The Cathedral Shop will be open on Tuesdays starting June 24th from noon-3pm.  The shop is also open on Sundays from 11:15am to 12:30pm and Fridays by appointment. For more information, please call the Parish Office.

 

Parish Office Hours for Summer.  The Parish Office will be closed on Mondays. Office hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 9am-3pm. The office will re-open on Mondays starting Sept. 8th.

 

Believe it or Not.  Diocesan Youth Ministries at Camp Bishopswood will hold the 10th annual BION Camp Aug. 19-23 for youth completing grades 6-12. Have fun with new friends, enjoy activities and explore faith while living in God’s beautiful creation! To download an application, go to www.maineyouth.org.

 

The St. Luke's Book Group will meet on Monday, June 30th at 6:30pm in the Oratory to discuss “A Thousand Splendid Suns”, the sequel to “The Kite Runner”.  The club will take the summer off and plans to start up again in the fall. For more information, please call Sallie Smith at 865-0539.

 

The Third Annual Ice Cream Social. All are invited to share delicious ice cream and good conversation as we soak up the sun—or shelter in the shade of the Copper Beech Tree—on Sunday, July 6th after the 10am service. This is an annual event that celebrates the soft air of summer and the fellowship of community.  Interested in being a soda jerk for the day? Call the Parish Office at 772-5434.

 

St. Luke’s Food Pantry is open Thursdays, 9:30-11am and the number of pantry visitors continues to grow. Your donations of both food and money are greatly appreciated and needed. Volunteers are also needed. Please call the Parish Office if you are available to help, even it is just for the summer. 

 

The Lambeth Conference. From July 16th to August 4th Bishop Knudsen and Bishop Lane will be gathering with Anglican bishops from around the world in Kent, England for the Lambeth Conference. As this meeting is designed to build community and connection within the Anglican Communion, no legislation or official pronouncements are planned. Instead, this is a time of Bible Study, sharing, and visioning about how in the midst of our differences we can be one in Christ. Please pray for our bishops, for the church and for all those at Lambeth. For more information, please check out the following websites:

 

Parishioner Julia Hugo-Vidal, whose pen name is Julia Spencer-Fleming, has just released her latest mystery novel entitled “I Shall Not Want”. It is the latest adventure of the Rev.
